Everything you need to know about interpreting

Do you need interpreting at an event? Not sure what you need? If so, here’s what you need to know.

We’ve all heard the phrase “speaking your language”, right? Well, without interpreters, this simply wouldn’t be possible.

Did you know that a whopping 63% of all EC meetings take place with an interpreter? And 11% of those meetings are to and from Czech? (If you’d like more statistics this report is really interesting!) As interpreting is such a vital part of international business nowadays, we thought we’d go over the three different types of interpreting with you.

Simultaneous interpreting

Simultaneous interpreting is where a team of at least 2 interpreters sit in a soundproof booth. The speaker will speak into a microphone, which will go through to the interpreter, who will then interpret almost simultaneously. The delegates will then listen to the interpreter through a headset. If there are more languages on offer, the delegates normally choose which channel on their headset/language they listen to.

Consecutive interpreting

Consecutive interpreting is one of the most popular types of interpreting as it doesn’t require any special interpreting equipment. The speaker will speak, and then pause to allow the interpreter to interpret what they’ve just said.

Whispered interpreting

Whispered interpreting is where the interpreter sits among the delegates, and whispers what the speaker said. It can only be used for small meetings where people sit closely together, and is used as a quicker type of consecutive interpreting.

So, as you can see, interpreting requires quite a bit of time and planning.
If you’re not sure which type of interpreting is right for you, all you have to do is get in touch.
We’ll then go through everything with you so your event is a success.
