Consecutive interpreting

In this type of interpreting the speaker pauses in their speech and the interpreter immediately repeats the sentences or shorter sections in the other language. In an ideal world, the speaker plans their speech in segments. Consecutive interpreting is most often used in business meetings, presentations, lectures or different types of public speeches.

Case study

Unexpected change in the content of consecutive interpreting

As a result of a malfunction of a new honey filler in the client’s production hall, the content of the consecutive interpreting from Czech to German changed from minute to minute. Instead of the planned machine testing and training of operators, our interpreter translated the content of meetings at which the fault and its possible solution were discussed.

More about consecutive interpreting

To put it simply, it’s interpreting with pauses.

The interpreter always listens to a sentence or a shorter segment of the speech and when the speaker pauses, the interpreter conveys the information in the other language. This type of interpreting is particularly useful in situations in which speakers know that making pauses in their speech will not complicate things. Typically, during some business meetings, presentations, short lectures, or various types of public speeches. It is also often called accompanying or liaison interpreting.

What do we need to know in order to prepare a quote for you?

  • In which languages we will be interpreting.
  • What topics are involved.
  • Estimated date.
  • The venue.

To prepare for interpreting, we always need as much information from you as possible on the topic and reference materials, such as a presentation for a lecture or a contract in the case of a business meeting. It is necessary for the interpreter to be familiar with the subject matter and learn the required terminology so that everything goes smoothly.

FAQ – What do you most often wish to know?

The sooner the better. Ideally, in the weeks before the event, especially for non-standard languages.

In addition to the interpreting itself, the price also includes transportation to the venue and preparation for the interpreting.

Unlike consecutive interpreting, simultaneous interpreting occurs in real time, without any pauses, while speakers are talking.

It is suitable in situations in which the speakers know they won’t be making pauses. This is typically the case at conferences and whenever it is necessary to interpret into several languages at once. Usually, this requires the installation of interpreting equipment.

Since simultaneous interpreting is done in real time, interpreters need to adapt to the tempo of the original speakers. It is an extremely demanding job that requires interpreters to work in pairs, taking turns and switching approximately every 20 minutes.
